What is meant by Lumbering? Define in detail the main factors responsible for large scale development of Lumbering in temperate coniferous forests?

Lumbering And Responsible Factors For Development Of Lumbering In Temperate Coniferous Forests

Lumbering:

Introduction:

Lumbering is carried on in many regions, especially in the coniferous, hardwood and mixed forests of the Northern Hemisphere, in eastern North America and central and Northern Europe. Lumbering supplies the most important product, viz, wood in the form of logs, planks, shooks, etc. The growth of lumbering industry depends in nature forests, relief of land’s transport facilities, local demand, supply of capital and labour and climatic condition. Due to variation in the environmental factors, viz, nature of the forest, relief of land, transport facilities, supply of labour, etc, lumbering is carried on in various form. Commerce has developed tropical hardwoods going to cool lands and their softwoods coming to tropical lands.

Lumbering in Cold Temperate Coniferous Forests:

The persistent snow-cover is beneficial in as much as it provides rivers and streams for transporting logs of timber to the markets and to the saw and pulp mills. Snow cover during winter season is dense in these coniferous forest areas. The logs are piled in heaps on this snow cover. The snow melts and rivers start their flow and these logo move downwards to the snow and pulp mill. The difficulties if agriculture became the benefits for the lumbering industry in these regions. For example, cold climate is a hurdle for agricultural development but it is a definite asset for the lumbering industry. In cold temperate forests and North America the Russia Federation, Finland, Norway and Sweden coniferous softwood predominates.

Factors:

The main factors responsible for large scale development of lumbering in temperate coniferous forests are:-

  1. Mechanization
  2. Easy Cutting of Trees
  3. Cheap Electric Power
  4. Favorable Environment
  5. Efficient Management
  6. Transport Facilities
  7. Nearness to Big Industrial Regions

Principal Centers of Lumbering in Cold Temperate Coniferous Forests:

The principal centers of Lumbering in this region are Northern Sweden, Northern European Part of the Russian Federation, Finland including Moscow region, central oral and Asian part of the Russian Federation. The provinces of British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec dominate lumber production in Canada. Much of the forests have been cut to provide agricultural land in the U.S.A. Little lumbering activity is done in his north east part of U.S.A, due to excessive presence and population and industries. The pacific North West, the Rocky mountain, Coastal Alaska and California are main centers of LUMBERING industry.
